LADYSMITH – The Ladysmith Regional Court sentenced former G4S cash-counting officer Selulekomo Mofokeng (29) to seven years’ imprisonment with two years suspended in the theft of R1.2 million. However, the woman will serve five years in prison following sentencing handed down on 30 April, ending a trial that stemmed from the theft at the G4S Ladysmith branch on 19 October 2024.

Warrant Officer Sibu Ncane, spokesperson for the Hawks in KwaZulu-Natal, said two years of the seven-year sentence were suspended for five years, provided Mofokeng is not convicted of a similar offence during that period. He said the accused pleaded guilty on 26 February this year after numerous appearances. “The matter was postponed for sentencing on 30 April. She was also declared unfit to possess a firearm,” said Ncane. He said the Hawks managed to recover R7 400 of the R1.2 million that Mofokeng had stolen.

Ncane said the Newcastle Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation gathered overwhelming evidence during the probe.

“An initial investigation by the Ladysmith SAPS Tracing Team linked Mofokeng to the theft while she was employed as a cash-counting officer. During the Hawks’ investigation, CCTV footage showed Mofokeng removing cash from the counting room and placing it into a bag. The Hawks sent the video to the Forensic Science Laboratory, where image experts enhanced and confirmed her identity,” said Ncane.

He said that following the compilation of evidence, Mofokeng voluntarily handed herself over to Ladysmith detectives in November 2024.

“She was then arrested and charged with theft of cash,” said Ncane.

Brigadier Zenobia Mulligan, the Acting Provincial Head of the KwaZulu-Natal Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, welcomed Mofokeng’s sentence and commended the members for their good work.
