Forensic clues emerge in double murder of Bloemfontein twins

BLOEMFONTEIN – Free State police forensic experts have recovered several spent cartridge cases from the scene where Bloemfontein’s twins Kegomodicoe and Keabecoe Lekone were gunned down yesterday in broad daylight. The cartridges form part of the evidence into their murder that has gripped the Free State capital.

Preliminary evidence revealed that they were ambushed at the gate when entering the premises driving their charcoal-coloured Ford Ranger. The front of their vehicle was extensively damaged. Social media is awash with news of the Lekone twins’ fatal shooting.

Lt Col Thabo Covane, provincial spokesperson for the police, said the Provincial Serious and Violent Crimes, Murder and Robbery Unit has launched a manhunt for unknown armed suspects in connection with the brazen shooting of the identical twins. He further appealed to members of the public to assist the police in tracing the suspects, who are on the run. He said two murder cases were opened at the Mangaung Police Station for investigation.

The Lekone brothers, who owned the popular Ekhayeni Pub & Grill in Bochabela, were shot execution-style at one of the business premises located along Mkhuhlane Road in Bochabela.

Covane said a witness who was inside the double-storey property reported that he noticed an African male running towards a white Chevrolet Aveo hatchback following the shooting. He said the witness reported that he was at the upper section of the building at the time of the shooting.

“He alleges that he rushed outside to establish where the sound of the shots came from, when he noticed an African male running towards a white Chevrolet Aveo hatchback. He did not see whether the male had an object in his hands as the vehicle sped off,” said Covane. He said there were possibly two other occupants already inside the vehicle.

Preliminary evidence revealed that the Lekone twins were gunned down at the gate of the premises while inside their charcoal-coloured Ford Ranger.

Covane said Kegomodicoe was the driver at the time of the incident and Keabecoe the passenger, adding that an ER24 paramedic declared both victims deceased at the scene.

Any member of the public who has information that could lead to the arrest of the suspect(s) is requested to contact investigating officer Colonel Msokoli Bolsick on 082 466 8530. Alternatively, information can be reported at the nearest police station, submitted via the #MySAPSApp, or provided by calling the SAPS #CrimeStop number on 08600 10111.
