TEMBISA – The case against Sekhukhune United footballer Mokete “Shaune” Mogaila in which a nine-year-old-child lost her life, has been postponed again, this time to 2 December by the Tembisa Regional Court.
Mogaila (29) appeared before the Regional Court where he faces charges of culpable homicide, reckless driving, and fleeing the scene of an accident in connection with the fatal crash that claimed the life of Gomolemo Mavimbela in the early hours of 30 October 2024.
The collision occurred on Andrew Mapheto Road in Tembisa when Mogaila’s black BMW allegedly veered into oncoming traffic and struck head-on with a red Hyundai i10 driven by Keo Mavimbela, who was traveling with her two children. Young Gomolemo died in the crash, while her mother and 13-year-old brother sustained serious injuries that required extensive medical treatment.
According to police reports, officers discovered alcohol bottles and suspected drugs, including dagga and an unidentified powder substance, inside Mogaila’s vehicle following the collision. Dashcam footage of the incident has since emerged, capturing the severity of the crash.
Mogaila initially fled the scene but surrendered to the police later the same day. He was released on bail of R20,000 by the Tembisa Magistrate Court.
Mogaila has established himself as a versatile winger and forward in South African football. His career has spanned several Premier Soccer League clubs, including Highlands Park (2018-2020), TS Galaxy (2020-2021), Royal AM (2022-2024), and most recently, Sekhukhune United, which he joined in 2024.
The footballer has also represented South Africa at international level since 2023, earning five caps and scoring one goal for Bafana Bafana during the COSAFA Cup. His first international goal came against Botswana in July 2023, marking a career highlight that now stands overshadowed by the tragic events of October.
National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane, said that the 2 December court date will focus on the disclosure of docket contents, a crucial procedural step that will allow both prosecution and defence teams to review all evidence collected in the case. This includes witness statements, forensic evidence from the crash scene, toxicology reports, and the dashcam footage that captured the collision.
Mogaila remains out on bail and continues his football career pending the resolution of the case.
