LETABA – A fire at the Letaba Rest Camp in the Kruger National Park damaged two tourist units on Thursday 24 September, Sanparks has confirmed.

Staff intervened immediately and managed to contain the blaze before it spread. No injuries or fatalities were reported.

The damaged units were not in commission at the time as they were being repaired following storm damage earlier this year, said Sanparks spokesperson JP Louw.

Louw confirmed that all other facilities at the camp remained operational, including the park shop, filling station, the elephant museum and camp reception.

An investigation is under way to establish the cause of the fire.

Reconstruction completed

Earlier this month Sanparks confirmed that the reconstruction of flood-damaged culverts in the Kruger National Park has been completed.

Environment, forestry and fisheries minister David Maynier officially opened the reinforced concrete culverts on the H4-1 Road in Skukuza rest camp on Sunday 6 September.

The culverts form part of the busy route between Skukuza and Lower Sabie and were among numerous structures destroyed when heavy rains lashed the region between 10 and 20 January.

The flooding caused an estimated R640.19 million in road-related damage across the park, with total damage standing at R950 million.
