Tomorrow marks the end of an era for thousands of Western Cape matriculants as the final examinations of the 2025 academic year take place, with last 1 470 candidates set to write their final papers in Agricultural Management Practices, Marine Sciences, and Music Comprehension.

The conclusion of Wednesday’s exams will bring to an end a rigorous examination period that has seen 112 different papers administered across the province, representing the culmination of 12 years of schooling for this year’s matriculants.

Western Cape Minister of Education David Maynier expressed satisfaction with how the examination period has unfolded, crediting the success to exceptional management by education officials and school staff.

“The exam session has run smoothly this year, thanks to the exceptional management by our officials and school staff. This is a massive administrative task, and we appreciate the support that the public has shown during the exams,” Maynier stated in a media release issued today.

The Minister reserved special praise for the province’s matriculation teachers, acknowledging their tireless efforts throughout the year. “Thank you to our matric teachers who have worked tirelessly to prepare our candidates for these exams. Your support has built a strong foundation for your learners’ future lives and careers,” he said.

With the writing phase drawing to a close, attention now turns to the marking process—a logistical undertaking of considerable scale. An army of 4 190 markers will now face the task of assessing over 954 000 exam scripts across 12 marking centres throughout the province.

This marking operation represents one of the largest annual administrative exercises in the Western Cape’s education calendar, requiring precise coordination to ensure fair and accurate assessment of student performance.

Students and families now face a seven-week wait for results, with the national matriculation results announcement scheduled for Monday, 12 January 2026. Individual candidates will receive their results at their respective schools or through the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) website on Tuesday, 13 January 2026.
