Damaged black BMW motorcycle in road after fatal collision that killed 32-year-old rider in Somerset West

SOMERSET WEST – A fatal collision at a busy local intersection claimed the life of a 32-year-old motorcyclist on Thursday morning (29 January) in Somerset West.

Warrant Officer Suzan Jantjies, spokesperson for Somerset West police, confirmed the incident occurred around 09:45 at the intersection of Winery Road and Raithby Road.

According to Jantjies, the motorcyclist was travelling along Winery Road toward the R44 on a black BMW when he reportedly attempted to overtake a truck moving in the same direction. Simultaneously, the driver of an old white Toyota Corolla station wagon was turning into Raithby Road.

Consequently, the motorcycle and the vehicle collided. The motorcyclist was apparently flung off the bike, which reportedly crashed into the rear-end of the vehicle.

Emergency services and Somerset West police officers attended to the accident, where the 32-year-old died on scene after succumbing to serious injuries sustained.

Police are investigating a case of culpable homicide following the accident.

No arrest has been made in connection with the collision.
