GAUTENG – The nation’s brightest academic minds have shared their blueprint for achieving excellence in the demanding world of matriculation. After competing against more than 900,000 candidates nationwide, 42 exceptional learners emerged as South Africa’s top performers in the 2025 National Senior Certificate examinations.
Minister of Basic Education, Siviwe Gwarube, celebrated the country’s top achievers from the Matric Class of 2025 during her annual breakfast event in Fairlands, Johannesburg, on Monday morning.
The power of unwavering support
Among these outstanding achievers is Simesihle Khuzwayo from King Bhekuzulu College in KwaZulu-Natal, whose journey to success was marked by extraordinary resilience. When illness struck and hospitalisation threatened to derail her academic ambitions, an incredible support network stepped in to ensure her dreams remained within reach.
“My teachers were phenomenal – I could reach out with questions at 1am and they’d respond. I’d literally chase them down in the staff room for extra papers and tests,” Khuzwayo shared at a special ceremony in Johannesburg. Her determination was matched by her family’s dedication, with her mother securing additional tutoring and her twin sister serving as a vital academic lifeline, delivering worksheets and assignment updates during hospital stays.
For Tholakele Bhutelezi, Simesihle’s mother, the year tested every fiber of her strength. “I had to maintain courage in front of her, but privately, I’d retreat to the bathroom to cry,” she revealed. The emotional toll of dividing attention between the hospital and home, while watching her daughter’s academic future hang in the balance, was overwhelming. Today, however, those tears have transformed into pure joy and overwhelming pride.
Balance: The secret ingredient
According to SA News, learners emphasised that academic excellence doesn’t require sacrificing personal well-being. Nchongatakor Besong from Johannesburg’s prestigious Jeppe High School for Girls advocates for a holistic approach to matric success.
“The stress is inevitable, but maintaining balance is everything,” Besong explained. “Engaging in cultural activities, spending quality time with friends, and having healthy outlets actually enhances your ability to focus academically. It’s about creating a well-rounded life that supports your goals.”
The non-negotiable elements
Angie Ntuli from Phumzile Secondary School in Mpumalanga distilled the success formula into its essential components. “Grade 12 demands unwavering perseverance, strict discipline, and an absolute refusal to surrender,” she said. Her achievement stands as testament to the transformative power of comprehensive support from family, friends, and dedicated educators.
Another top achiever, Takunda Muchweni, a learner from Jan Kriel School in Kuils River, has a remarkable story of perseverance.
Her story is testament to the strength of the human spirit, as she navigated her educational journey while overcoming significant challenges due to her disability, including a recent hospital stay. Her experience embodies the challenges faced by students across the country, proving that with dedication and hard work, one can rise above adversity.
These remarkable students have collectively identified four pillars of academic excellence: robust support systems, relentless hard work, laser-sharp focus, and unshakeable determination. Their stories serve as inspiration for future matriculants and validation for the educators and families who invest tirelessly in South Africa’s educational future.
The official 2025 National Senior Certificate results will be announced by Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube this evening at 18:00, marking the culmination of months of anticipation for hundreds of thousands of learners across the nation.
