England enters Friday’s first Test against Australia with their most hostile attack in decades. The team places faith in fast bowling to regain the Ashes.

England has not fielded such genuine pace since John Snow and Bob Willis. That bowling line-up helped secure England’s 1970-71 series victory in Australia.

Jofra Archer and Mark Wood provide express pace for England’s attack. Both bowlers regularly exceed 144 kph in their deliveries.

Josh Tongue adds wicket-taking threat to the pace battery. Brydon Carse and Matthew Potts provide impressive depth to the attack.

Gus Atkinson could feature as another seaming option for England. The seamer has taken 63 wickets at 22.01 average across 13 Tests.

Captain Ben Stokes offers lively medium-pace if he maintains fitness. Recent injuries have affected Stokes’s availability throughout the series.

England has not won any of their last 15 Tests in Australia. The run includes 13 defeats and two draws since their 2010-11 triumph.

James Anderson provided fast-medium accuracy during England’s previous Ashes success. Steven Finn, Tim Bresnan and Chris Tremlett added crucial pace support.

Australia’s hard, bouncy pitches traditionally favour fast bowling approaches. Recent England seam attacks have lacked raw speed on Australian tours.

“I want to know how hard you run in,” said managing director Rob Key. “Can you sustain pace at 136-141 kph consistently throughout your spells?”

Archer and Wood both carry injury concerns throughout their careers. Doubts persist over their ability to maintain fitness for extended periods.

Archer has played just 15 Tests since his debut six years ago. The bowler starred in England’s 2019 50-over World Cup triumph.

Wood has made only 37 Test appearances since his 2015 England debut. Similar injury problems have restricted his international career significantly.

Wood took 17 wickets during England’s 4-0 defeat in Australia during 2021-22. His career-best figures of 6-37 highlighted his Australian tour potential.

The fast bowler has not played senior cricket since February. Knee surgery sidelined Wood before a recent hamstring scare during preparations.

England’s medical team cleared Wood for Friday’s Perth Test. The bowler passed fitness tests following his warm-up game concerns.

“We want a battery of fast bowlers,” Wood explained. “England traditionally relies on seamers rather than Australia’s fast bowling vision.”

“Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood bowl consistently at 144 kph. They maintain relentless pressure on opposition batsmen throughout their spells.”

“We’re adopting Australia’s blueprint to replicate their success,” Wood continued. “This approach should pressure their batsmen like they’ve pressured ours.”

Australia captain Pat Cummins has been ruled out through injury. Josh Hazlewood also misses the first Test due to fitness concerns.

England faces temptation to field both Archer and Wood together. Australia’s vulnerable top order presents an attractive target for pace.

The second Test in Brisbane begins on December 4. This provides England with adequate recovery time between matches.

Steve Smith will captain Australia in Cummins’s absence this week. The batsman suggested changing pitch conditions could neutralise England’s pace strategy.

“Slower bowlers sometimes prove harder to play on certain wickets. Batsmen must manufacture pace when pitches offer less natural bounce.”

“This series will present different challenges for both teams,” Smith concluded.
