To improve road safety and restore accessibility on the most severely affected sections of the R364 between Calvinia and Clanwilliam, the Department of Roads and Public Works will implement a series of emergency interventions.

On Saturday 25 July, a technical team of the Department conducted a detailed assessment of flood damage along the first 20 kilometres of the Calvinia to Clanwilliam Road (R364) within the Hantam Local Municipality.

The Department stated that the emergency interventions will include importing suitable road-building material and blending it with the existing surface to stabilise two critical sections within the first 10 kilometres of the route.

The planned rehabilitation works will also include the installation of culverts, ripping, filling and compacting approximately 800 metres of the road, as well as the construction of a drainage hump to divert stormwater away from the roadway and reduce the risk of further erosion.

After completing these critical repairs, the Department will undertake spot regravelling on selected sections of the road, commencing from the 50-kilometre mark from Soetwater Farm towards Clanwilliam, as part of the ongoing restoration programme.

The Department stated that these phased interventions form part of its continued commitment to restoring infrastructure damaged by recent floods, improving road safety and ensuring reliable access for communities, farmers, businesses and all road users.
