A recent accident on the Glenelly Wine Estate claimed the life of a toddler.

Cloetesville police are investigating a case of culpable homicide after the death of a toddler on a Stellenbosch wine estate last week.

According to police spokesperson Warrant Officer Zenobia Sedeman, the accident occurred on the Glenelly Estate in Ida’s Valley around 17:30 on Friday 22 August. She confirmed the accident claimed the life of a three-year-old boy.

It is understood a driver has just started a vehicle when he noticed the child and a pot plant in front of the car, Sedeman explained. According to the police report, the car suddenly moved forward and the driver tried to bring the vehicle to a halt. However, it is believed the cable of the accelerator was stuck and the vehicle kept moving forward, hitting another vehicle parked close by.

“The three-year-old child was trapped under the car and pulled out by people on the scene at Glenelly farm,” Sedeman confirmed.

Eikestadnuus contacted Glenelly Estate for comment on the incident, but was informed no comment would be provided as the investigation is ongoing, and to respect the privacy of the family involved.
