Stellenbosch FC picked up a valuable away point against Kaizer Chiefs on Tuesday 13 October, settling for a 1-1 Betway Premiership draw at FNB Stadium.

Fresh from a three-week international break, the Maroons made the trip to Johannesburg for a league clash that had plenty of pre-match buzz surrounding it.

It was the visitors who looked the sharper of the two sides early on. In the 21st minute, Sinoxolo Kwayiba nearly broke the deadlock when his strike clipped the upright, with Chiefs goalkeeper Renaldo Leaner left with no answer.

Near-missed opportunities

Amakhosi gradually worked their way into the contest and nearly went ahead themselves around the half-hour mark.

Wandile Duba found himself in space inside the box, but Stellies skipper Sage Stephens stood tall, producing a sharp reaction save at close range to keep things level heading into the break.

Stellenbosch came out with clear intent after the restart, and it took just two minutes for them to make it count. Kwayiba, eager to make amends for his earlier near-miss, timed his run to perfection to meet Terrence Mashego’s inviting delivery from the left.

The left-back had earned man-of-the-match honours with a scintillating run, and Kwayiba did his work justice, slotting home a composed finish to hand the Cape Winelands outfit a deserved lead.

The advantage, though, proved short-lived. Ten minutes later, Mduduzi Shabalala hauled Chiefs level, steering his effort past a wrong-footed Stephens with a calm finish inside the area.

Knockout time

The final stretch saw chances fall at both ends.

A late penalty shout for handball against Stellenbosch came to nothing, and despite both sides pushing for a late winner, neither could find the breakthrough.

For Stellenbosch FC, a point on the road against one of the league’s traditional giants is a solid return – and a sign that the Maroons remain a force to be reckoned with in this campaign.

The Cape Winelands team’s next league fixture is a home match against Chippa United on Friday 30 October. The team now turns its attention to the Carling Knockout Cup, which launches with the fixture-draw and venue determination on Wednesday 14 October.
