More than 90 teachers, caregivers, partners and donors gathered for the inaugural Raising Superheroes Implementation Workshop, hosted by the StartWell Foundation, last month.
United by a shared purpose, they came together to learn how they can become the superheroes their children need.
The workshop focused on issues that matter deeply to the future of South Africa: nutrition, child development and caregiver well-being.

Hidden sugar
One of the most impactful moments of the day was a powerful sugar demonstration presented and led by Eat Better South Africa and The Noakes Foundation.
Participants were confronted with the hidden sugar content found in many everyday foods and drinks, bringing the country’s growing diabetes crisis into sharp focus.
“People were genuinely shocked,” said one participant. “It changes the way you look at food when you actually see the amount of sugar that’s hiding in products we consume every day.”
The session highlighted the important work of Eat Better South Africa, which empowers communities to improve their health through simple, sustainable changes, and The Noakes Foundation, which focuses on addressing metabolic health challenges such as obesity, diabetes and malnutrition through education, research, and community initiatives.
Founder and managing director of the StartWell Foundation, Org van der Wath, unpacked the importance of nourishing children with purpose.
“Feeding a child is about far more than satisfying hunger,” he explained. “It is about building brains, strengthening bodies and creating opportunities for lifelong success.”
Nourishing minds and bodies
Van der Wath said nutrient-dense foods, including animal-source foods and vegetables, provide the essential building blocks for healthy growth, learning and development.
The workshop also explored the often- overlooked power of play. Strategic activities that develop gross motor skills – such as climbing, balancing, running, and jumping – play a critical role in brain development and school readiness.
A recurring message was that healthy children need healthy caregivers.
All were reminded that caregivers who are nourished and supported are better equipped to raise thriving children.
The event reflected the mission of the StartWell Foundation, which works to improve early childhood development through practical nutrition and education interventions.
As the workshop came to a close, there was a sense of hope and purpose in the room.
More than a training event, Raising Superheroes was a reminder that lasting change begins in communities, classrooms, and homes.
