Award-winning theatre makers Sylvaine Strike and Toni Morkel will bring audiences a compelling narrative entitled Cottonwool Kid, exploring the life of an eponymous fictional character, at The Drama Factory in Strand from Thursday 2 to Sunday 5 July.
The piece is inspired by the autobiographical writing of Morkel, originally from Stellenbosch and a Rhenish old girl.
Strike’s sharp creative eye and distinctive signature and Morkel’s unique performance style have combined to devise a poignant and hilarious piece of theatre that is as original and astounding as one would expect from these two artists.

Compelling narrative
Journeying into the anxious heart of the pathology that is obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), the audience will witness the complex journey of a life lived and celebrated. It has a name, Cottonwool Kid (CK), who spends her childhood convinced she’ll be committed if anyone finds out her truth, so she counts, counts and counts… to contain.
Morkel and Strike have woven together a compelling narrative of a little girl burdened by the pathological carelessness of her parents.
She goes through her journey with her loyal dog, Luigi, always by her side, keeping watch, always wary – a person much too young to process her heavy emotional burdens constructively.
Audiences testify to the success of Morkel’s autobiographical piece – the resonance it has across all age groups and backgrounds, touching hearts and triggering memories.
The production will be staged at 19:30 on Thursday and Friday, with matinées at 15:00 on Saturday and 16:00 on Sunday.
Tickets, at R220 per person, can be securely booked online at www.thedramafactory.co.za.
