SPORT: Gymnasts ready to flex on regional level

The talented rhythmic gymnasts from Fynbos Gymnastics Club in Stellenbosch recently participated in the Level 1-3 Rhythmic Gymnastics District Trials hosted by the Cape Winelands Gymnastics Association on Saturday 11 May. Sixteen supple athletes from the club have been selected to represent the Cape Winelands district at the Western Cape championships to be held on Saturday 8 June, among them (from left) Aila Schoonwinkel, Alexandra Baptiste, Mikaela Botes, Olivia van der Merwe and Singa Biyana. “We are extremely proud of the dedication and hard work that these young gymnasts have put into being selected to represent their district at the Western Cape championships,” said the club’s Simone Philips. Rhythmic gymnastics combines the elements of gymnastics and dance, using handheld equipment like ribbons, ropes, balls, hoops and clubs.
