The Western Cape Provincial Serious Violent Crime (SVC) detectives have launched an investigation into a deadly shooting in Franschhoek on the evening of Monday 13 July.
Constable Ndakhe Gwala, provincial police spokesperson, confirmed the fatal incident at a spaza shop in Lavender Street.
“Franschhoek police responded to reports of a shooting at 19:30, and on arrival found two adult males who had sustained gunshot wounds. They were transported to a medical facility for treatment and later declared deceased.”
Two more people were shot and critically injured.
Under investigation
“The motive for the shooting is extortion related and the suspects are yet to be arrested.”
A community member, who asked to remain anonymous, also confirmed that the murders are extortion related. “This has been going on for months and nothing is being done. There are two extortion groups threatening business owners in Franschhoek. The extortionists are not from this town.”
In May three people were killed and two seriously injured after two gunmen opened fire at a home in Jakaranda Street. This shooting is also under investigation.
At this stage information surrounding the death toll of the recent incident is contradicting, as the community member claimed three people have died.
No arrests have been made.
