Children injured after being hit by municipal bakkie in Mooiwater

Stellenbosch Municipality confirmed a police investigation is underway after a municipal official was involved in an accident with a municipal vehicle at the weekend.

In a statement, the municipality said a worker of its Electricity Department was on standby duty when he responded to service calls in Mooiwater, Franschhoek. The worker was “involved in an unfortunate motor vehicle accident involving two minors, aged 12 and 13”, it read.

Emergency services, including Traffic Services, EMS and Franschhoek First Tesponders, were immediately dispatched to the scene. The two children were stabilised and transported to nearby hospitals, where they are receiving medical treatment and recovering.

The vehicle involved has been impounded and Franschhoek police opened a case of reckless and negligent driving.

“The municipality will cooperate fully with the investigation and provide all necessary support to the families affected,” the statement read. “We deeply regret this unfortunate incident and extend our thoughts and prayers to the two young patients, their families and all those impacted.

“The Municipality will remain in contact with both the families involved and the employee’s family as the investigation proceeds and we wish the children a full and speedy recovery.”
