GIZA, Egypt – A truck smashed into a tour bus west of Cairo on Tuesday, killing 13 people and injuring 34 others, Egyptian state media reported.
The collision happened on the Cairo-Asyut Western Desert Road, according to the Al-Ahram newspaper.
An AFP correspondent saw authorities clearing the highway. A crane lifted the large bus, which had its entire front section ripped off, exposing mangled steel and debris.
Passenger seats lay scattered along the roadside, while debris from the bus remained visible on the truck’s rear.
The injured received treatment at a hospital in Giza, Al-Ahram reported. Authorities launched an investigation to determine what caused the crash.
Egypt sees frequent road accidents, often blamed on reckless driving, poor vehicle maintenance and uneven law enforcement.
Nearly 6 000 people died in road accidents across the country last year, according to Egypt’s state statistics agency.
Last month, 22 people died in a bus crash in Sinai, including 10 Jordanian tourists.
In August, at least 18 people, many of them children, died in northern Egypt when two pick-up trucks carrying agricultural day-labourers crashed.
