The Springboks announced their arrival on the international stage with an emphatic 80-31 demolition of the Barbarians at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, but coach Rassie Erasmus won’t be reaching for the champagne just yet. Whilst the try-fest delivered spectacular entertainment, the visitors’ five-try haul, including three in a catastrophic seven-minute spell when South Africa were down to 14 men, exposed vulnerabilities that could prove costly against sterner opposition.

Flying start sets the tone

The Boks stamped their authority early, with Edwill van der Merwe crossing after captain Siya Kolisi’s brilliant decoy run drew two defenders. Cheslin Kolbe, handed kicking responsibilities, nailed a tricky conversion for a 7-0 lead. The Barbarians responded immediately when Alex Nankivell sliced through Quan Horn’s defence, finding Virimi Vakatawa who touched down to level proceedings at 7-7.

That stung the Springboks into action. Pieter-Steph du Toit powered over after several bruising phases, restoring the lead at 14-7. The Barbarians’ discipline unravelled spectacularly as skipper TJ Perenara saw yellow for a high tackle, followed swiftly by Miracle Fai’ilagi’s binning for a cynical breakdown infringement.

Capitalising ruthlessly on their numerical advantage, Van der Merwe grabbed his second after Grant Williams delivered a sumptuous 30-metre pass from the base of a ruck. Jasper Wiese pounced on a botched lineout to race away for South Africa’s fourth, pushing the lead to 28-7 inside 20 minutes. Riley Norton added another before the tables turned dramatically.

Defensive meltdown exposes cracks

Williams’ yellow card for a deliberate knockdown handed the Barbarians a lifeline they seized with both hands. The invitational side ran riot, crossing through Franco Molina, Andrew Kellaway and Perenara in a blistering seven-minute blitz that slashed the deficit to 35-26.

Kolbe steadied nerves with a crucial score just before half-time, breaking from a scrum where he was playing scrumhalf to make it 40-26 at the interval.

Second-half surge seals comprehensive victory

Van der Merwe thought he’d completed his hat-trick early in the second half with a 70-metre screamer, only for the TMO to intervene. Aphelele Fassi was sin-binned for a high tackle on Perenara, cancelling the try. Undeterred, the Springboks responded through replacement JJ Kotze, who finished off a dominant maul.

The floodgates opened as Van der Merwe, Faf de Klerk, Jesse Kriel, Andre Esterhuizen and Zachary Porthen all crossed, with Kellaway grabbing a consolation for the visitors.

In the earlier fixture, South Africa ‘A’ overcame a disjointed start to defeat Zimbabwe 40-0, with Yaqeen Ahmed, Markus Müller, Haashim Pead, Nico Steyn, Imad Khan and Jaco Williams all crossing despite Ahmed’s 20-minute red card.
