EASTERN CAPE – The Eastern Cape continues to ramp up its road safety operations as travellers make their final dash home ahead of Christmas Day.

Eastern Cape Transport Department spokesperson Unathi Binqose said that multiple operations, including static roadblocks and high-visibility patrols, are underway simultaneously along key strategic corridors across the province and will continue into the early hours of Christmas Day.

“This period traditionally sees an increase in traffic as workers from the retail sector and other industries leave CBDs to spend Christmas with their loved ones,” said Binqose.

He further said that law-enforcement officers are deployed in significant numbers to ensure the safety of all road users.

Binqose said that weather conditions remain less than ideal, with rainfall resulting in wet and slippery roads and reduced visibility in many areas.

“Motorists are urged to remain vigilant and take extra precautions: switch on headlights, maintain a safe following distance, adjust speed to road conditions, and never drink and drive,” said Binqose.
