A 19-year-old Eastern Cape matric pupil drowned while swimming at Mtunzini Main Beach on Thursday afternoon.
The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Richards Bay duty crew were activated at 13:10 on Thursday 1 October following reports of a drowning in progress. The KZN surf rescue network was alerted and the NSRI rescue vehicle, towing the NSRI JetRIB rescue craft, responded to the scene alongside police, the Mtunzini Community Police Forum (CPF), Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife rangers and IPSS Medical Rescue.
According to NSRI Richards Bay station commander Norman Rautenbach, Bradfield was swimming with his girlfriend when she left the water. On looking back, she noticed he was in difficulty – apparently caught in a rip current – before he disappeared in the surf zone.
On arrival, responding teams found local community members, friends, family, and local boaters already searching using a private drone, a rigid-hull inflatable boat (RHIB) and a jet-ski.
The body of Jonathan Bradfield was later discovered.
Marlow school pays tribute
The Marlow Agricultural High School in the Eastern Cape has paid tribute to Bradfield.
“It is with deep sadness that the Marlow community bids farewell to one of our own, Jonathan (Winter) Bradfield (matric 2026).
“Today there are few words that are truly enough. Our hearts go out to Johny’s father, younger brother, his family, friends, classmates and everyone who loved him and walked a piece of life’s path with him.
“Johny will be remembered for much more than just his time in a Marlow blazer. He was a friend, a classmate, and a Wolram – a young man with a deep-rooted faith, a beautiful heart and he had a special place among those who knew him. He was much loved among the staff who got to know him through his Marlow years. His place and the memories he leaves behind will forever remain part of our school community.”
