JOHANNESBURG – A 54-year-old South African man has been arrested at OR Tambo International Airport after police discovered cocaine concealed in his luggage, marking the latest in a series of major drug seizures that have raised fears the country is becoming Africa’s drug capital.
The suspect was intercepted on Thursday morning whilst attempting to board a flight to Hong Kong, China. Police seized drugs suspected to be cocaine following an intelligence-led operation.
Police spokesperson Lt Col Amanda van Wyk said the suspect is expected to appear before the Kempton Park Magistrates Court on Friday on drug trafficking charges. The exact weight and value of the seized narcotics have yet to be determined.
The arrest comes just one week after authorities intercepted two separate cocaine consignments at the same airport with a combined estimated value of R200 million, highlighting the alarming frequency of drug trafficking attempts through South Africa’s busiest airport.
The country has witnessed a dramatic increase in drug seizures over the past year, with OR Tambo International Airport emerging as a key battleground in the fight against international narcotics syndicates. Law enforcement officials say South Africa’s geographic position and transport infrastructure make it an attractive transit point for traffickers moving drugs between South America, Asia and Europe.
The South African Police Service said it remains committed to disrupting and dismantling drug trafficking networks through intelligence-led operations and targeted interventions at ports of entry.
However, the mounting number of seizures has sparked concern amongst security experts that criminal networks are increasingly using South African territory to move illicit substances across continents, potentially cementing the country’s reputation as a regional drug hub.
Authorities have not disclosed whether the latest arrest is linked to the previous week’s seizures or whether the suspect was working alone or as part of a larger syndicate.
