Somerset West police have charged a taxi driver with reckless and negligent driving after striking a pedestrian on the N2 in Somerset West on Tuesday 18 November.
The 28-year-old taxi driver was arrested at the scene, while the 48-year-old pedestrian was taken to hospital following the collision at 08:42.
Kevin Jacobs, spokesperson for the City of Cape Town’s Traffic Service, confirmed the accident had occurred on the N2 opposite Helderzicht Sports Ground and involved a Toyota Quantum. The scene was cleared by 09:35.
When DistrictMail & Helderberg Gazette arrived at the scene paramedics were working to stabilise the victim as onlookers gathered from surrounding areas. Traffic officers managed the scene with cones, causing delays.

Lt-Col Jacolise Fleischmann, Somerset West Police Station commander, said the driver was charged with reckless and negligent driving on a public road after hitting the victim and a second vehicle. A grey Hyundai i20 was involved as a result of the main accident between the taxi and the pedestrian, but the driver of this vehicle sustained no injuries.
Police said it was not known whether there were passengers in the taxi, as the vehicle was empty on the arrival of officers.
“It is alleged the taxi probably drove on the yellow line,” Fleischmann said, “something that would be investigated, and which eyewitness accounts would make clear once all the statements are taken.”
Whether the pedestrian was crossing the national highway, she said, had yet to be investigated and therefore could not be confirmed.
