XHARIEP – Concerns have been raised over the deteriorating condition of the gravel road between Donkerpoort and Philippolis, with residents and road users warning that the route has become increasingly dangerous.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Xhariep says it will write to the municipality, submit oversight questions and request an urgent assessment of the road to ensure that emergency repairs are prioritised.

According to the DA, residents, farmers and regular road users have repeatedly reported the condition of the road, but little progress has been made in addressing the damage.

Sections of the gravel road have reportedly deteriorated to the point where motorists are forced to navigate hazardous conditions or take unsafe detours. The poor state of the road is also said to be affecting emergency response times and increasing the risk of accidents.

The party argues that the damage is the result of prolonged neglect and insufficient routine maintenance rather than a single unforeseen event.

Concerns have also been raised about the financial and operational challenges facing local government, with the DA citing previous reports by the Auditor-General that have highlighted financial pressures within the Xhariep District Municipality. The party contends that these challenges have affected the municipality’s ability to maintain infrastructure and deliver essential services.

The DA has called on the relevant municipal and provincial authorities to conduct an immediate assessment of the Donkerpoort–Philippolis road, carry out emergency repairs where necessary, and implement a long-term maintenance programme to prevent further deterioration.

Residents and road users have echoed calls for urgent intervention, saying safe and reliable roads are essential for daily travel, agricultural activities and emergency services.
