THABONG, Free State: A spate of domestic violence cases reported in the Sunrise View policing precinct in Thabong prompted members of the SAPS from Sunrise View Social Crime Prevention, joined by Community Policing Forum (CPF) members, to initiate a crime awareness campaign.

The campaign was held in the Ten City zone on 12 March.

The spike in domestic violence incidents reported in this precinct highlighted the urgent need for community intervention and awareness, Sgt. Palesa Thabana, Lejweleputswa SAPS spokesperson, has stated.

The comprehensive action taken addressed multiple crime categories affecting the area, including: assault, gender-based violence (GBV), theft of copper cable, malicious damage to property and general theft.

Officers focused on providing residents with practical information that could help reduce these crimes.

Community members were encouraged to work collaboratively with police and report any criminal activities to ensure that offenders are dealt with lawfully.

Educational pamphlets containing crime prevention tips were distributed among community members, providing them with practical guidance on how to protect themselves, as well as their property. The materials included information on recognising warning signs of domestic violence and steps to take when witnessing or experiencing criminal activity.

The initiative reflects ongoing efforts by the SAPS to engage proactively with communities rather than simply responding to crimes after they occur.

Local police have indicated that similar campaigns may be rolled out in other areas experiencing elevated crime rates, particularly those related to domestic violence and GBV.
