Children and youth from Somerset West had the opportunity to take part in the Silverleaf Galactic Quest holiday programme hosted by the Vacation Bible School (VBS) from Monday 3 to Saturday 8 July.

Gizelle Swanepoel, director of VBS, said the interactive programme was hosted at Silverleaf Church at Helderberg High School on the Helderberg College campus. “Investigation Station Galactic Quest is an interactive VBS programme that teaches children God loves us so much he has a plan to save us,” she said. “The story line is based on Nasa space travelling through the six days of creation.”

Altogether 80 children between the ages of four and 13 participated in the holiday programme. “The children who acted as Space Cadets received daily assignments to learn more about how God has a special plan for their lives,” said Swanepoel. “And each day the kids did devotion, story time, crafts and outside sports.”

On day one to day seven the Galactic Quest Programme focused on the six days of creation which included light, air, dry land, plants and trees, the sun, moon, stars and the solar system, the birds and fish storyline and land animals and creating things.

“The children watched a movie from the Geoscience Research Institute of the General Conference of Seventh Day Adventists church,” Swanepoel said. “And on Saturday (8 July) they received their certificates.”

She also thanked the community that helped to collect recyclable materials over the last six months and these recyclables were used at the craft station. Swanepoel also thanked those who supported the fundraisers to be able to make the Galactic Quest VBS possible. “The kids were also given an overview talk on recyclable materials and why it was important for us to reuse recyclables to make new items from. We also taught them that by collecting recyclables it helps keep our planet safe and protects the birds and fish in the oceans.”
