The Anton Bantu Foundation and Laureus Sport for Good teamed up over the school holidays to host a four-day sport and life-skills holiday programme for children between the ages of 10 and 13 years in Macassar.
Activities they participated in included rugby, soccer, cricket, athletics, netball and dance.
In all, 120 children came together over the four days and took maximum advantage of the programme, as the aim was to create a safe space for these children over the Easter weekend school holiday. Three meals were also served to the children daily. One organiser, Lewellyn de Wee, remarked on how it was a day to enjoy.
“The holiday programme also forms part of the Laureus Goodwill Tour, which visits throughout the Western Cape,” he explained. “Additionally, a newly established in-school programme named Laureus Elect formed part of the holiday programme. This refers to a group of 30 selected Grade 10 students who participated in the I am Water programme, which focuses on environmental and marine issues.
“This is a three-year programme, which runs until they exit school and also benefits them through a support and motivational system to ensure they pursue further studies after matric,” said De Wee. “I am very excited as founder of Anton Bantu Foundation and also thrilled to be associated with Laureus South Africa and its programmes in the community of Macassar, and especially Macassar High School. I would like to thank other partners such as Dr Bryoni May of Out the Box, a 100% volunteer-led social innovation initiative whose mission is to empower and uplift vulnerable communities with educational opportunities, and the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport Metro East and its coaches for their support.”
