Women were celebrated with a special day dedicated to just them during an event held by Strand Women’s Network last Thursday (11 August).

The celebration, which saw many local women descend on Dr G.J. Joubert Primary School’s hall, was successfully organised by 10 Strand policewomen who banded together to form the network.

Sergeant Janine Brigette Thomas, who forms part of the network, said the sole purpose of the function was to empower women, but also to offer society’s super women the opportunity to take off their capes and enjoy a bit of fun and relaxation.

Jolene Oliver was the motivational speaker at the function and treated participants to a Somatic Nia dance-workout.

“The 9th of August 1956 created new logistics when women became the cornerstones of our country and our homes. It’s women who marched and took a stance, creating a better life for all,” was the beginning of a poem read by Thomas, which showcased resilience and importance of women.

Every woman who attended the function received a small gift and there was also a raffle where 10 lucky ladies each won a special prize.

“We held Women’s Day functions in the past, but this one was unique because it was more like a team-building day,” Thomas pointed out.

Strand Women’s Network was started by women officers at Strand Police Station with the purpose of bringing change among women in the workplace. “We really want to uplift and encourage women in our society,” said Thomas.
