Wings of hope have spread over the shoulders of the young and vulnerable of Broadlands Park, where a woman has opened her heart to give her time and energy to young females.
Michelle Prinsloo had been running a soup kitchen from her home in 14th Street for at least 30 years and worked as a cook and caregiver at Bright Lights Children’s Home for 15 years when she said she felt God speak to her, asking her to work with abused women. This she did on Wednesdays, and named her organisation Wings of Hope, and it was when pursuing this that young girls came to her asking for food.
“I prayed and asked God how I could help these girls. It dawned on me that during my time at Bright Lights I had learnt sewing and could use this knowledge to teach the girls skills.” So now, on Tuesdays and Fridays after school, eager and enthusiastic youngsters come to her home, where they learn to sew and knit, but importantly also to have someone to speak to and share the burden of their problems and challenges, and to seek the help they need.
For the younger kids it’s a safe place after school, where they also get a warm meal at least twice a week or as donations allow. Prinsloo also donates hygiene packs to the girls, such as sanitary pads, and helps the young ones with stationery for school.
“Even the small kids are becoming eager to learn a new skill, and this is so refreshing. Any donations are welcome.”
The girls have already learnt to make items of clothing and bedding. To donate towards Wings of Hope, contact Prinsloo on 064 577 0402.
