A woman was hospitalised after a bakkie crashed into a light motor vehicle in Gants Centre, Strand, last Thursday morning (9 March).
The collision occurred in Gerber Boulevard around 08:30 on Thursday and emergency personnel, including traffic and the City of Cape Town’s fire and rescue service, responded to the incident.
Jermaine Carelse, spokesperson for the City’s fire and rescue services, said crews from Strand were dispatched after an emergency call about the motor vehicle accident in which a female occupant sustained injuries was received at 08:15.
“On arrival crews found ER24 personnel rendering medical assistance to an adult female,” he said. “The two vehicles were removed prior to our arrival. Fire and rescue service personnel left the scene at 08:40.”
According to ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring, paramedics were dispatched to the scene around 08:30 and found two vehicles in the middle of the road.
On closer inspection they found a woman, believed to be in her 40s, seated inside the light motor vehicle, believed to be a Volkswagen Fox (Jetta MK 1).
“Medics assessed the woman, who was complaining of severe pain in her back,” Meiring related. “She was extricated from the vehicle, provided pain-relief medication and later transported to a nearby hospital. The driver of the bakkie fortunately escaped injury. Local authorities were on-scene for further investigations.”
DistrictMail & Helderberg Gazette managed to make contact with the driver of the Mazda bakkie who provided insight into how the collision occurred.
The 44-year-old driver recalled halting at the stop street in Mynhardt Street and waiting for oncoming vehicles to pass before turning right into Gerber Boulevard.
The bakkie collided with the oncoming Volkswagen, which was apparently indicating the intention to turn left in Mynhardt Street, but proceeded straight down Gerber Boulevard.
“I feel really bad about the collision and just want her to be okay,” said the driver, the only occupant of the bakkie.
Strand police confirmed an accident report was compiled following the incident.
Despite several attempts, DistrictMail & Helderberg Gazette failed to reach the injured occupant before its print deadline on Tuesday morning.
