In honour of Women’s Month, a captivating and empowering art exhibition titled “Woman and the Ocean” has taken centre stage at the Gordon’s Bay Yacht Club.

This exceptional showcase not only celebrates the boundless creativity of female artists, but also pays homage to the profound connection between women and the mesmerising depths of the ocean. Against the backdrop of the shimmering waters and elegant sailboats this exhibition weaves a tapestry of strength, resilience and beauty that honours both womanhood and the sea and is a celebration of the exceptional artistic talent of the women of the Helderberg.

A nautical celebration of femininity

As visitors step onto the deck of the yacht club they are immediately enveloped by an atmosphere of unity and empowerment. The exhibition’s curator, local art teacher and famed artist Merissa Slingerland has masterfully compiled a thoughtful blend of visual storytelling, showcasing the unique perspectives of female artists and their interpretation of the ocean’s majesty. This tribute serves as a reminder of the parallel qualities shared among women and the vast expanse of the sea both possess an innate strength, an ability to adapt, and a deep wellspring of mystery.

Diverse Expressions of Artistry

The “Woman and the Ocean” exhibition offers a diverse collection of artworks that span various mediums, from paintings and sculptures to photography and installations. Each piece conveys a unique facet of the feminine experience and its harmonious relationship with the ocean. Vibrant seascapes evoke the ebb and flow of emotions, while abstract pieces mirror the fluidity and strength that women exhibit in navigating life’s challenges. One of the art pieces that showcase the unique creativity of woman, is created by Gordon’s Bay artist Marien Denner. It is a dress completely made from materials that washed up on shore and is also a reminder of the devastating effects human’s actions have on our oceans.

Celebrating women

Club commodore Jana Loubser said: “This Women’s Month the yacht club’s exhibition serves as a poignant tribute to the remarkable synergy between the feminine spirit and the majestic oceanic realm. It is a great opportunity to offer the women of the Helderberg community a platform to display their creativity.”

The “Woman and the Ocean” exhibition is only one of the events that is on offer to women during Women’s Month at the yacht club. The club hosted a “Mad Hatters Gin Tea Party” on 9 August, with several women telling their stories of resilience. On the weekend of 12 and 13 August the sailing academy will run a women-only learn-to-sail course and on the 26th Tania Pringle of Verum Capital will address the women at a Woman & Wealth breakfast event.

Development sailing school

All funds raised during the exhibition will go towards the club developmental sailing programme, which offers disadvantaged children the opportunity to learn the skills of sailing. Corné Weidemann, a famous South African artist, has generously donated one of his own artworks valued at R25 000 to the club to be raffled to boost funds for the programme. Raffle tickets are available at R50 at the club.

The “Woman and the Ocean” art exhibition at the yacht will run from 4 August until 1 September, and the yacht club will be open daily between 10:00 and 22:00 except on Mondays. The exhibition is open to the members of the public. If you should be interested to participate in any of the other Women’s Month club events on offer, you can get in contact with the club office on gbyc@gbyc.co.za or 021 856 3263.
