Helderberg Cricket Club (HCC) emerged victorious in a hard-fought First Division C encounter against Blue Downs CC at the Helderzicht Sports Ground on Saturday (28 February), claiming a vital three-wicket bonus-point win.
The match, defined by outstanding bowling and a composed chase, saw momentum swing several times before the hosts eventually crossed the line.
After winning the toss and electing to bat, Blue Downs found themselves under immediate pressure by a clinical Helderberg bowling attack. While the visitors looked to set a competitive target, they were ultimately bowled out for 158 runs in 41.4 overs.

Chad Bailey starred with the ball, notching up figures of 5/25 in his 10 overs. He was well-supported by Aden Williams (3/20) and Junaid Sylvester (2/17).
Chasing 159 for victory, HCC’s path to victory was not without hurdles. The Blue Downs bowlers made inroads, picking up seven wickets and keeping the required run rate in focus.
However, Declan Fredericks proved to be the calm in the storm, playing a patient and disciplined knock of 48* and ensuring he was there to see his team home.
He found useful support from Tyrick Rossouw (29) and Jerome van Niekerk (17), who provided the necessary runs to keep the scoreboard ticking.

HCC reached the target in the 36th over, finishing the match on 160/7.
BACK TO WINNING WAYS
In First Division B, a rain-affected encounter at Gugulethu CC on Saturday resulted in a hard-fought 44-run victory for Somerset West CC (SWCC)via the Duckworth-Lewis (D/L) method.
The match was defined by a standout performance from player of the match, Josua Smit, whose half-century anchored the SWCC innings before he contributed with the ball to stall the Gugulethu CC chase.
After the home team won the toss and elected to field, SWCC faced early trouble when captain Larry Morkel fell in the first over.

However, a steadying partnership between George Hlazo (42) and Scott Innes (35) brought the visitors back into the contest.
The SWCC middle order struggled against the disciplined Gugulethu CC attack.
Despite the pressure, Smit played a vital counter-attacking innings, smashing 62 runs off 60 balls to push the total to 233/10 in 49.5 overs.
Chasing a revised target, Gugulethu’s top-order found it difficult to find rhythm against the pace and precision of Cameron Hewson and Gous Koen.

Hewson claimed the crucial scalps of the top four batsmen to finish with 3/39, while Koen was exceptionally tight, conceding just 22 runs in his 10 overs and picking up two wickets.
As rainy weather interrupted play and the match was halted at 34.3 overs with Gugulethu at 123-6, the D/L calculations placed SWCC comfortably ahead by 44 runs.
๏ฎThis coming weekend (Saturday 7 March), Helderberg CC will host Vikings CC at Helderzicht Sports Ground, while Somerset West CC will be on the road to lock horns with Bishop Lavis CC.
