Fitness enthusiasts can now enter the Sportsman’s Warehouse Winelands marathon, half marathon and 5 km fun run/walk, hosted by Helderberg Harriers on Saturday 26 November.
The event will start and finish at Eikestad Primary School in Stellenbosch. It was last hosted in 2019, so organisers are excited to get participants back on the road.
The marathon is a Two Oceans and Comrades qualifier, and recently received a World Athletics Certificate as an A-grade AIMS marathon.
The 42,2 km distance (marathon) starts at 05:30 and costs R220 for licensed and R290 for unlicensed runners. The 21,1 km (half-marathon) event starts at 05:50 and costs R180 for licensed and R240 for unlicensed runners, while the 5 km fun run/walk starts at 06:30 and entries are R50 on the day.
The organisers will only accept pre-entries, which close on Sunday 13 November. Event T-shirts and caps will be available.
One major difference to this year’s race is that organisers are following the trends of other marathons, making the event completely plastic sachet free. They will, however, provide water every 3 km, but it will be poured in biodegradable paper cups.
Participants are urged to keep an eye on Instagram and Facebook for posts on how to drink water from a cup while running.
Furthermore, all entrants will be entered into the lucky draw with prizes from Sportsman’s Warehouse and Brooks, while the top performers will win cash prizes.
Organisers guarantee the vibe will be great at the finish, with a DJ and the popular Sean Falconer on the mic. Club gazebos will be allowed at the finish, but no braais or fires will be permitted. The Organ Donor Foundation will also create awareness around the need for organ donors.
Marathon runners will also have the opportunity to sign up for a study being conducted by University of Stellenbosch and the Maties Gym.
