Mid-afternoon traffic was disrupted by a hail of bullets showering from the bridge over the N2 highway at the R44, Broadway Boulevard, last Friday (10 March) in an apparent shoot-out between the occupants of two vehicles.
The incident occurred around 14:00, and while some fellow motorists assumed a car was backfiring others appeared oblivious.
But dozens of bullet-shell casings and shattered glass on the tarmac of the R44 and both sides of the N2 told a different story, and some motorists took to social media to decry the incident, describing the scene as one from the “wild, wild west”.
Traffic remained backed-up for the rest of the afternoon, as a portion of the road was closed to allow police forensics to comb the scene for evidence.
Police have not divulged much detail of what occurred, only confirming the incident and relaying two people were injured.
“Somerset West police registered a double attempted murder following the shooting incident on Friday afternoon,” provincial spokesperson Capt FC van Wyk stated. “Two males aged 48 and 49 were shot and injured.”
He said according to reports the driver and passenger were driven to a nearby hospital for treatment.
“Circumstances surrounding this shooting incident are under investigation. The docket was transferred to the anti-gang unit for further investigation, and anyone with information on the incident is kindly requested to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111.”
