Die biblioteek doen beroep op die gemeenskap vir skenkings van nuwe tydskrifte en koerante, aangesien die Stad Kaapstad nie meer hierdie items aan biblioteke voorsien nie. Strand: Julie Andrews Uncut introduces audiences to the fascinating history of one of the last remaining icons of the great stage-and-screen musical. Growing up on the West End stage, she became a star of stage and screen on both sides of the Atlantic. Starring Alison Hillstead, accompanied by Nathan Johannisen, and written and directed by Amanda Bothma, the show will be staged at The Drama Factory tonight (Friday 27 September) at 19:30, and Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 September at 16:00. The 60-minute show is a beautiful, honest and sincere tribute to Dame Julie Andrews, featuring the songs she is famous for and her fascinating history. Tickets cost R170 or R180. Somerset West: The Country Craft Market reopens for the spring season at Southey’s Vines at 186 Main Road and is scheduled to take place from 09:00 to 14:00. The market is renowned for the very best handcrafts and art in the area, with each stall manned by crafters themselves. Visitors to the market will be able to enjoy a bite to eat, prepared by members of the 1st Somerset West Scouts as well as coffee, smoothies and craft beer. Somerset West: Before European settlement, Africa was rich in diverse wildlife, but intensive farming and hunting led to the extinction or endangerment of many species. Guest speaker at the University of the Third Age (U3A) Helderberg’s monthly meeting, Dr Dean Allen, will discuss efforts to restore wildlife balance, focusing on conservation in the Eastern Cape, where elephants are being reintroduced. The meeting is scheduled to take place at the Dutch Reformed church at 82 Firmount Road at 10:00. Allen, a renowned author and historian, has extensively published on the British Empire’s history and politics, particularly in South Africa. He has taught at universities worldwide and is currently based in Gqeberha (PE), working on a book about conservation and wildlife tourism in the Eastern Cape.
