Somerset West: All avid knitters are implored to dedicate time to participating in the Helderberg community-based organisation Masikhule’s annual Mandela Day initiative, Cast On 4 Kids. This year’s instalment will take place at the Urban Voice church, on the corner of Schapenberg and Sir Lowry’s Pass roads, from 11:00 to 14:00. The initiative challenges participants to sit and knit or crochet woollens for 67 minutes, or simply collect warm items such as blankets, beanies, scarves and jerseys, for distribution to thousands of children under the age of six receiving education at local preschools and crèches. There is also a need for gently-used picture books for toddlers, empty cereal boxes, large tea boxes and colourful plastic lids. For those not eager to get the knitting needles clicking for the cause, please consider sponsoring double-sided fleece blankets lovingly made by Khulani Creatives, an empowerment project supporting unemployed women in Alexandra. The cost per blanket is R120. For more information, reach out to Sandy Immelman on sandy@masikhule.org.
