Somerset West: Today (14 October) marks World Hospice and Palliative Care Day, which is celebrated by Helderberg Hospice every second year with a concert, Voices for Hospice. Under the directorship of well-known musician Bevan Sylvester, and in support of Helderberg Hospice, the United church will be filled with a wonderful music mix of song and melody. The repertoire includes a stirring version of “Lara’s Theme” from Dr Zhivago, with pianist Allen Stidworthy, singers Anita Glenister and Leonie van Niekerk, and cellist Rosemary Robertson, a local group of musicians adding their talents to the musical afternoon. Also performing are the Cantibile Choir, James Isaacs and Sr Gillian Francis, a nurse at Helderberg Hospice. Somerset West: If you are living with someone whose drinking is affecting you, or perhaps you are experiencing problems after having lived with an alcoholic relative or friend, help is available at the Al-Anon meetings held weekly. Meetings take place every Monday at 20:15 and Thursday at 12:00. Alternatively, help is also available via a telephone call, which will be treated as confidential. Stellenbosch: The fundraising charity breakfast “Beyond Business”, which seeks to shine a light on the crucial issue of child sexual abuse in the Helderberg, takes place at the Seven Sisters Vineyards (off Annandale Road). The event will be held from 09:00 to 12:00 and in aid of Patch, the Helderberg Centre for Child Victims of Sexual Abuse. Those attending are invited to engage in a meaningful dialogue on child sexual abuse and networking opportunities. A limited number of tickets are available at only R300 per person (breakfast included). Somerset West: The Friends of Somerset Library will host a violin recital by François Voges, retired music teacher of Beaumont Primary School, in the Somerset West Library hall from 11:00 to 12:00. He will be joined by an accompanist. Entrance is free. His will be the second recital hosted by Voges and the Friends, the previous one being a great success.
FRIDAY 27 OCTOBER
Strand: The multi-talented James Stewart and John Ellis return to The Drama Factory with their popular live show at 19:30. Blending piano, guitar, melody and vocal harmonies, the award winning singers, songwriters and musicians will journey with the audience through the songs that inspired them to write their own – from interpretations of some their favourite songs to intimate performances of their own. Stewart is an Emmy-nominated, multi-SAMA award-winning singer, songwriter, producer and all-round nice guy. Ellis was part of Tree63 and toured internationally for many years, but has returned to South Africa. He is also a highly-regarded singer, songwriter, guitar player and a published poet.
