Somerset West: The Palaeontology U3A Groupwill have a rock-and-fossil display at its monthly meeting which takes place in the activity room at Helderberg Manor in Hazelden Drive at 14:00. An introductory lecture to geology will start off the meeting, after which those attending are able to interact with the physical samples and information posters on display. The meeting concludes with a fascinating video on Microrapture, a four-winged dinosaur discovered in China, proving that many dinosaurs had feathers. Somerset West: The international musical phenomenon Hairspray comes to The Playhouse Theatre from Saturday 25 to Friday 31 March. The smash-hit musical comedy, which broke box office records and has been delighting audiences in the West End, on Broadway and the big screen since 1988, will be presented by the Helderberg Academy of Theatre at the Playhouse for the first time. Audiences will be welcomed to the ’60s, where everyone’s grooving to a brand-new sound. The play features the vivacious heroine Tracy Turnblad, who has big hair, a big heart and big dreams to dance her way onto national TV and into the heart of teen idol Link Larkin. Strand: The University of the Third Age (U3A) Helderberg holds its monthly meeting at the Strand Town Hall at 10:00. Guest speaker Professor Harold Herman, a person steeped in Helderberg history, will share his extensive knowledge of this subject with an illustrated presentation. Herman will provide insight into the basin’s history from the 1950s to 70s. His presentation will comprise photographs captured during the bygone eras with street scenes, now demolished buildings, then renowned farms as predecessors knew it, and that which traces the development of Helderberg towns such as Somerset West, Strand, Gordon’s Bay and Sir Lowry’s Pass – first under the Dutch, then the British, and finally as the independent union followed by the republic. Copies of his autobiography, From a Local Village to the Global Village: My personal journey in education in a divided South Africa, will be on sale for R350 (cash only).
