The Helderberg Fresh Fine Wine & Food Festival, which takes place at the 322-year-old Vergelegen Wine Estate on Saturday 3 December, presents the perfect opportunity for visitors to discover fresh new food and wine delights. More than 20 top Helderberg wineries will offer more than 100 wines to swirl, sip and savour, while the basin’s most talented chefs will vie to create the most tempting gourmet food, all included in the ticket price. Guests will be treated to diverse culinary styles, including Michael Bridgeman of Stables restaurant at Vergelegen, renowned Lebanese-born chef Ghenwa Steingaszner of Ghenwa’s Culinary Club based at Lourensford, Stefan Bekker of Erinvale Hotel, Botanicum at Morgenster, Craig Cormack and Beau du Toit of SALT at Waterford Estate, and Bertus Basson (pictured) of Chorus at Waterkloof Vineyards and Clara’s Barn at Vergenoegd Löw. Strand: An explosion of rock music will rattle the basin when Women of Rock – Unleashed takes to The Drama Factory stage at 19:30. The concert pays tribute to the talented, strong, independent and amazing women of rock music over the last 60 years – from Janis to Alanis, Patti Smith to Pink, and Blondie to the Bangles.

The songs and energy will make the audience want to rock all night long as RockSteady, a five-piece band, brings the music to the basin. The annual event is held to remember those gone too soon, especially as the festive season has a way of bringing the dearly departed to mind and making us more aware of the empty chair in the house. The programme includes a slot to share a message of hope, a poem, letter, CD or DVD recording of their choice (maximum three minutes). There will also be some musical items and a special video in memory of the departed.
