A podium finish eluded Jon-Antohein Phillips at the Africa Weightlifting Senior Championships held in Egypt last week. But he impressed nonetheless with a 115 kg snatch and a 155 kg clean and jerk (pictured) as he fell just short of an attempted 163 kg on the clean and jerk. The Strand local said afterwards he was very pleased with his performance. “I feel great after this competition because it gave me the confidence I need going into African games next month in Accra, Ghana. I feel back at full strength after being injured last year and I definitely think I can aim to break some of my previous SA records in the near future. But overall this competition was a great experience filled with great competitors.” Phillips will fly to Ghana at the beginning of March.
