Strand: Following the award-winning success of Nijinsky’s War, leftfoot productions and Andrew Steyn presents Birthing Nureyev at The Drama Factory in Asla Park at 16:00. The new production is written by award-winning Henque Heymans and stars Ignatius van Heerden. It is a dance-infused theatrical work based on the life of, arguably, Russia’s finest dancer, Rudolph Nureyev, and is leftfoot productions’ third instalment of work focusing on a dancer, which completes the trilogy. The production first launched to critical acclaim at the 2019 National Arts Festival in Makhanda. Birthing Nureyev focuses on Nureyev’s exceedingly dramatic escape from Russia on 16 June 1961, when he slipped through his keepers’ fingers to defect to the West. The KGB’s insidious attempts from behind the iron curtain to destroy his career are juxtaposed with his prodigious success in the West. Despite his fame and fortune Nureyev was shattered when his home country denounced him and damningly charged him with high treason. Most heartbreaking was the inevitable alienation from his loved ones. Tickets cost R200 each and can be booked online through www.thedramafactory.co.za

Somerset West: Dr Rayne Stroebel challenges the typical narrative of aging as an inevitable decline in his address, “Optimal ageing – with intent; A focus on well-being” at the monthly gathering of the U3A Helderberg at Somerset West United church at 10:00. The gerontologist advocates for a shift towards well-being and neuroplasticity, emphasising that these can lead to positive outcomes for the elderly, especially against neuro-cognitive impairments such as dementia. His career was shaped by early experiences in a care home in Heidelberg, leading to the founding of Geratec in 1996 and introducing the Eden Alternative in South Africa in 2010. His consultancy, Mind Matters, supports those with dementia, promoting a community ethos based on ubuntu, the belief in interconnectedness. Stroebel is a seasoned educator, having trained more than 3 000 caregivers and spoken at numerous international conferences. The event is free for members, with a R20 entry fee for visitors.
