He is an experimental nuclear physicist by training, a motivator by choice and conviction, and a general all-rounder who tries to use his gifts and talents to impact every person he interacts with. Somerset West: The Helderberg Hospice Open Gardens Festival takes place from Friday 20 to Sunday 22 October, and the art of gardening is very much the focus of this year’s beautifully curated selection of outdoor spaces. Breathtaking views, quirky sculptures, expertly trimmed topiary, clever use of colour and texture – each of the 14 gardens offers visitors a different expression of the garden owners’ love of gardening. Locals and their families get to enjoy a whole weekend of gorgeous gardens in support of the palliative care that Helderberg Hospice renders to the community, offering peace, comfort and dignity when it matters most. Somerset West: The Friends of Somerset Library will host a violin recital by François Voges, retired music teacher of Beaumont Primary School, in the Somerset West Library hall from 11:00 to 12:00. He will be joined by an accompanist. Entrance is free. His will be the second recital hosted by Voges and the Friends, the previous one being a great success.

Somerset West: The Southey’s Car Boot (Southey’s Thrift and Second-hand Market) returns to Southey’s Vines at 186 Main Road from 08:30 to 14:00. Somerset West: Helderberg Village Music Society hosts a classical concert by Viviamo per l’Arte– We Live for Art (comprising trio Albie van Schalkwyk, Nerina von Mayer and Pamela Wijnberg) at Talani Terrace, Helderberg Village, on Sunday 22 October at 16:00. The concert’s theme, “Beautiful Music inspired by Legend and Fantasy”, features the classical works of Bach, Ravel, De Bussy, Bizet and Clarke, performed by the inspiringly wonderful ensemble consisting of piano (Albie van Schalkwyk), two flutes (Nerina von Mayer and Pamela Wijnberg), piccolo and gong. Stellenbosch: A sunset hike will be held at Muratie Wine Estate. Participants will gather for the 3,5 km hike before sunset. The trail is marked from the Dirtopia Trail Centre, so hikers can walk at their own pace to start between 17:00 and 18:00. After 19:00, hikers who reach the look-out point can picnic with views of the Winelands before leaving at 19:30 to hike back, where coffee will be served.
