Strand: The City of Cape Town’s Environmental Management Department is joining forces with various stakeholders for a coastal clean-up initiative at the Helderberg Marine Protected Area along Strand Beach in significance of International Coastal Clean-up (ICC) Day. Somerset West: The Coachman’s Cottage Museum, on the corner of Victoria and Andries Pretorius street, will host a special Heritage Day photographic exhibition on the history of the Helderberg basin. The focus will be on photographs and maps of Helderberg communities including Somerset West, Gordon’s Bay, Sir Lowry’s Pass, Raithby, Firgrove, Faure, Macassar and Sandvlei. A new feature will be a detailed history of Sir Lowry’s Pass, research on Sandvlei, a new book of stories from residents of Macassar by Clint Abrahams, the history of the Macassar VGK church by Dr. C. Flaendorp and photographs of the farms on the northern side of the Helderberg – Zandvliet, Vergenoegd and Meerlust. The exhibition takes place from 10:00 to 15:00 and free tea/coffee and snacks will be served. All interested individuals are welcome.

Stellenbosch: Stellenbosch Museum hosts a Heritage Fair at the Village Museum in Ryneveld Street from 10:00 to 14:00. The fair will include workshops, exhibitions and performances, including but not limited to the Arabic-Afrikaans writing tradition, Xhosa beadwork, oil painting, Knapping, basic Xhosa language and, of course, wine tastings. Music performances include a Malayan choir, Khoi music performance and a Boereorkes performance. Admission costs R100 per adult and R50 per child, payable at the Village Museum’s ticket sales office in Ryneveld Street. Stellenbosch: The Mudita Foundation hosts its Serenity Fun Run at the Blaauwklippen Wine Estate. Participants can choose between a 6 km or 10 km run, both starting at 08:00. Somerset West: Before European settlement, Africa was rich in diverse wildlife, but intensive farming and hunting led to the extinction or endangerment of many species. Guest speaker at the University of the Third Age (U3A) Helderberg’s monthly meeting, Dr Dean Allen, will discuss efforts to restore wildlife balance, focusing on conservation in the Eastern Cape, where elephants are being reintroduced. The meeting is scheduled to take place at the Dutch Reformed church at 82 Firmount Road at 10:00. Allen, a renowned author and historian, has extensively published on the British Empire’s history and politics, particularly in South Africa. He has taught at universities worldwide and is currently based in PE, working on a book about conservation and wildlife tourism in the Eastern Cape. She spent her childhood performing on the Vaudeville circuit, singing and dancing, two shows a day, six days a week, alongside Pops and Barbara Andrews. She had a difficult childhood, but no matter the hard knocks, Julie’s talent could not be dimmed. If you’re a fan of Julie Andrews – or even if you aren’t – you will thoroughly enjoy what is a great performance.
