A bi-monthly soup kitchen, spearheaded by the Salem United church in Macassar, initially started as a means of giving thanks when a member had recovered following an illness, but the need in the community has prompted the organisation and its members to keep it running indefinitely.

“We started this in June and every two weeks we focus on a different area in Macassar,” said Sister Mattee Bor of the Salem United church. “We feed up to 200 people at a time. There’s a need in the community and we decided to keep the kitchen going. It’s also a means of service to the community.”

The most recent handing out of meals took place in Fish Street on Tuesday 16 August, where children, senior citizens and anyone in need of a hot meal, were given soup, sandwiches and fruit.
