A case of culpable homicide is under investigation after a man tragically died in an accident on Old Main Road in Somerset West on Monday (11 April).
The accident occurred at around 12:05 when a white Chevrolet left the road, crashed through a steel fence, and rolled before coming to a standstill in the yard of CSV Construction.
According to an employee of the company, who spoke on condition of anonymity, its staff were all busy at their desks when a loud bang rang out.
“The commotion forced us all to rush outside quickly,” recalled the staffer.
“We saw a crashed car on its side, a body lying on the ground, and a man climbing out of the car, but he appeared unscathed. We noticed a small fire under the car and rushed to get extinguishers to put it out.”
The employee said staff quickly cordoned off the area to keep the perimeter clear and that law enforcement and armed response arrived on the scene within minutes, and EMS services and police followed a short time later.
“Authorities arrived very timeously and jumped into action. There was a lot of bystanders and passersby who stopped at the scene. It was very unfortunate that a person had lost his life and we sympathise with the family. We are also grateful that no pedestrians or personnel were injured in this accident.”
There was also extensive damage to the premises of CSV Construction. At least six panels or 18 m of steel fencing were damaged, the entire electric fencing system has to be reinstalled and several outside spotlights were also damaged.VContinues on page 2
