The Helderberg Stroke Support Group (HSSG) pays tribute to the late Ivor Ryan Kammies, who died last Tuesday (15 February) at age 70.
After a stroke in 2010 he joined the Strand branch of HSSG in 2012.
The group stated that Kammies was more than just a member but served on the committee for many years.
He was elected onto the Committee of HSSG in October 2012 and in October 2013 was elected as vice-chairperson and served in this capacity until October 2017.
Kammies continued to serve on the HSSG committee until October 2019.
For many years he was also chairperson and committee member of the Strand branch of the HSSG.
“He was dedicated to the Helderberg Stroke Support Group, the Strand Stroke Rehabilitation Group and its members, and despite his own impairments after his stroke he was actively involved in the broader Strand Community,” reads the statement from HSSG.
“He was always busy helping others and never said no to an opportunity to help.
“His door was always open to assist people with queries and problems – whether it was to do with housing, [social grant agency] Sassa issues or other problems. He was an inspiration to many.
“As many people have said, Ivor was a good man. He was a wonderful and caring person and will be remembered for the important role he played in the history of the Helderberg Stroke Support Group.
“He was a pillar of his community and an integral part of the HSSG family for many years and will truly be missed by the Helderberg Stroke Support Group family.”
Kammies’ funeral will take place this Saturday (26 February) at his home at 7 Fourth Street, Rusthof, Strand and will proceed at 10:00 to the Dr GJ. Joubert School Hall.
