A local petrolhead who took on the Snoek & Patat Championship race was named Driver of the Day at the Weskus Oval Track on Saturday 4 May.

Pieter Meyer (44) of Strand was ecstatic with the award, the first in his almost 10 years of oval track racing. It followed his Sportsman of the Year award won last year.

“I can only thank my sponsors for allowing me to live my dream,” said Meyer.

He also competes in the regional championships and occasionally in the national championships and other once-off events in the stock class.

“Soon after I started racing I was sponsored an old Toyota Starlett with lots of history, and it took me three years to build it, and my first season out with it, over 2022-’23 I obtained third place in the club championships, fourth in the Western Province regional championships, fifth in the Klein Karoo Championships in Oudtshoorn, and in the national championships I finished eighth, so it’s been a really special last couple of years.

“I really enjoy the racing, for me it’s not just winning but about the experience, the adrenalin and the adventure, meeting fellow racers in a friendly outing.

“It’s a hobby that displays respect for competitors and the public, and if I win a trophy it’s a bonus.”

Meyer is currently fourth in the overall standings for the club championships and WP regional championships. His next race will be on Saturday 1 June at Round 6 of the WP Regional Championships which takes place at the Weskus Oval Track.

Meyer extended a special word of thanks to his main sponsor, Palm Tyre Service located in Main Road, Strand, as well as to all other sponsors who have contributed to his success so far.
