After a weekend off for most of our clubs, it’s back to the grind and the home straight of the season.
This coming weekend, three local clubs face their toughest opposition in weeks and there’s yet another thrilling derby to look forward to.
) St George’s vs Bellville – Bellville
The Lulus are still mourning the loss of deputy chairperson Nygal Phillips and will surely dedicate the rest of their season to the amazing work he has done for community and club. Travelling to Bellville is never easy, but the home team has not been invisible there this season. Another Lulu win will set them up nicely to challenge for either home quarter-final or semi-final spot. I don’t see them losing this one.
) All Saints vs Vineyards – Helderzicht
Saints are looking great this season. Their last home loss was the opening match of the season and I expect that form will continue against a recently disappointing Vineyards. The home team knows they have a quarter-final spot in their grasp, but will need to keep momentum, especially at Helderzicht. A four-pointer will be acceptable, but a bonus-point win will keep confidence high going into the derby versus Helderberg.
) Helderberg vs Collegians – Charles Morkel
Berge have hurt all opposition in recent weeks, but I feel Collegians will test them in a different way. The visitors’ style of play and players’ grit have always made them unpredictable opponents. Perhaps this is the wake-up call Berge needs before the knockout stages of the season.
) Raithby Universals vs Strand United – Raithby
RU are on a high after their last home win over Kraaifontein and have been fierce competitors in derby matches this season. This is finals rugby for both clubs as they look to ease their relegation worries. United have been poor on the road and injury concerns will add fuel to the fire. I expect a close, hard encounter.
) Macassar vs Blue Stars – Klapmuts
The MC Boys travel for their third consecutive fixture and will face a Blue Stars team that always bring their A-game in front of their supporters. Macassar’s recent mixed bag of results are not a cause of concern as I believe they will peak come knockout rugby time. I predict a good win for Macassar as they position themselves perfectly for a place in the semi-finals.
) Strand vs CPUT – Campus
Strand are unbeaten this season, which includes three impressive derby wins. CPUT might be a bit rusty, but will be tough as nails in their quest to play Super League B rugby. I think Strand will be tested upfront, but it will be perfect prep as they will face tough opposition in the semi-final.
