Third abalone bust in three weeks near Gordon’s Bay

A joint law-enforcement operation brought an end to illicit abalone transportation along the scenic R44 on Thursday 15 October, marking the third major perlemoen bust in the Helderberg region in under three weeks.

According to Western Cape police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel FC van Wyk, authorities intercepted a suspicious white Toyota Yaris with two occupants on Faure Marine Drive in Gordonโ€™s Bay at 11:52.

The operation had begun further up the coast when officials spotted the vehicle travelling from the Overberg poaching belt, which includes Kleinmond, Hermanus and Hawston.

Instead of a high-speed chase, the Department of Forestry and Fisheries inspectors discreetly shadowed the vehicle along the route while coordinating with local police.

Gordonโ€™s Bay police officers then established a tactical blockade to safely stop the vehicle as it entered the town.

“A search of the vehicle revealed five black bags containing 188 units of abalone, valued at R155 000. Two men were arrested at the scene and will appear in Strand Magistratesโ€™ Court once charged.

Growing pattern of interception

On Tuesday 6 October the City of Cape Town’s Law Enforcement officers and Gordonโ€™s Bay Security (GBSec) intercepted a Nissan NP200 bakkie on the N2 opposite a service station following a high-speed pursuit from Grabouw. Authorities confiscated 2 005 units of abalone and arrested the male driver.

On Tuesday 22 September City Law Enforcement officers executed an early-morning stop at the intersection of George Street and Gordonโ€™s Bay Drive in Strand, uncovering 856 shucked abalone units hidden in the boot of a vehicle. Two Macassar men, aged 35 and 36, were taken into custody and the vehicle was impounded.

With more than 3 000 units of illegal abalone seized in all three recent incidents, authorities continue to tighten their grip on key transit points connecting Overberg harvesting grounds to local distribution networks.
