The speedy reaction of Strand public safety foot patrollers led to arrest of suspected thief in the Strand CBD on Sunday 9 January.
Officer Joey Plaatjies and his team were patrolling in Michau Street when they heard people screaming in nearby Van Reyneveld Street.
They ran to assist and bystanders informed them a suspect had broken into a car. They got a description of the man and, along with some civilians, went looking for him. They tracked him down to Conradie Street, where he was detained.
Strand police arrived and arrested the suspect. The owner of the vehicle also arrived and opened a case of theft out of motor vehicle.
. In an unrelated incident, four suspects allegedly robbed a woman of her cellphone on the corner of Fagan and Church streets in Strand at 15:50 on Wednesday 12 January. Bystanders and safety foot patrol officers gave chase and managed to detain two suspects, while the other two got away.
Strand police were called to the scene and arrested the two suspects on charges of theft.
