The Return of Elvis du Pisanie is a poignant and uplifting story that follows Eddie du Pisanie, a 49-year-old salesman who, after being retrenched, contemplates suicide. Just as he is about to end his life, an Elvis Presley song on the car radio triggers a powerful memory from his childhood, prompting him to reconsider and embark on a journey to his hometown. The play, written by Paul Slabolepszy and performed by Ashley Dowds, is celebrated for its emotional depth, humour and stirring dialogue. It explores themes of nostalgia, heartache and joy, and is praised for its compelling portrayal of South African life and the impact of violence. The performance is described as a roller-coaster of emotions, with a surprising and impactful reveal that leaves the audience deeply moved.
